"Taking an Adult Swim in The Boondocks"

Yesterday night, Aaron Mcgruder's "The Boondocks" comic-strip-based-cartoon debuted on the Cartoon Networks Adult Swim line-up. Since I have DirecTV, I was able to see it early enough to where I could go to sleep at a decent time. Although, after having watched it, I would have gladly stayed up late just to see it on Pacific Coast time.

Besides the two most prominent voices of Johnny Witherspoon as the Grandpa, and Charlie Murphy as the voice of the grandson of a wealthy white man who basically owns the neighborhood... the story was as funny as the strip that it is based on, but far more 3-Dimensional than the strip is allowed, due to it's visual limitations. The animated intro to the show is an obvious spoof on "Samurai Champloo", another series on Adult Swim, but it's still a pretty cool way to introduce the characters of Huey, Riley and Grandpa Freeman.

Being that the strip is timely and topic-driven, it loses some of the personality that can be more easily conveyed by both the audio and visual experience that is an animated cartoon. I suspect that it will do well, since the characters are unique and funny, but it may also fail because of the honesty that we have all come to know and love from the strip. Honesty is more often than not lauded by us fringe-dwellers, but unfortunately we don't own any corporations... yet.

I hope that this show has a long life, being that Aaron is hardly suffering from a dearth of material to draw from, and an astute and constantly active mind to relay them into visuals with. And if Aaron reads this, I have a simple request for you: "Do another episode on 'Real Time with Bill Maher', alright? We need another man with a great sense of humor in the artistic field on that show."
